Great post Emily. Thanks for including me. With over two decades of helping nonprofits run better and having seen strategic planning go off the rails in all the ways you just described, my approach to strategic planning today pivots away from the traditional model in 2 BIG ways: 1. Strategic planning is led by the staff. (The board only involvement is to confirm that there is a plan and that the plan makes logical sense) 2. The goal setting process for strategic planning gets done every two months, so the plans are always up-to-date, can evolve based on the latest information, and teams never have to learn how to plan or plan to plan, saving everyone a ton of time.

Leading nonprofits through strategic, collaborative decisions

Are you haunted by a past #nonprofit #strategicplanning planning process? One that frustrated your team by pulling them out of their everyday tasks? That got you to think big but not how you were going to get there? Or the worst yet, one that sat on a shelf until the next time you were "supposed to" strategic plan? Strategic planning is also frustrating because it's not the right time. You aren't ready to answer questions like; ❔ What value do you bring to your community? 🤔 What leverage do you have with stakeholders to make big changes? ❔What big decisions do you need to address first? I talk to a lot of organizations that don't feel ready for planning and are skeptical of the traditional strategic planning process. The great news is that, when you are ready, there are so many creative ways you can go about strategic planning. As I'm interviewing the wide variety of strategic planners out there I'm discovering people like; Sarah Olivieri 🧯of Pivot Ground, who runs cohorts of nonprofits through short-term goal-setting plans, or Carol Hamilton of Grace Social Sector Consulting, who creates a fun and collaborative human-centered planning process, or Eric Ryan of Mission Met, who uses customized software to help organizations follow through on their strategic plan, and Amarachi Kejeh who coaches small groups in a DIY strategic plan. You're a 🎨creative thinker, so get creative with the right planning process for you! But if you feel like you aren't ready for strategic planning and need to build a foundation first, I can help you get there. ▶️The next step is to book a time with me to talk about where you feel stuck with future planning and how you can move forward by #listening to your community. Send me a direct message for a scheduling link.

🚫Your Board Shouldn’t be Approving Your Budgets! 📊💰 I know... at first that sounds bold... 🗣️ But stay with me because I've been working on this for a while. If this bold new approach makes you a little queasy at first, consider this question: 💡 When you are approving a budget, what exactly are you approving? Is it specific line items? Is it the total at the bottom? 🚫📊 You won't find “approving budgets”... in my upcoming Masterclass 5 Simple Steps to Achieving a High-Performing Nonprofit Board on Thursday, Sep. 14 @1pm ET/10am PT. ❌🎯 You also won't hear me tell you that the board should “set the strategic direction”. ❌🔍 Nor will I tell you your board should “stop micromanaging” (her advice on this might even shock you!). ❌💰 And I’m certainly isn’t going to tell you to get your board to fundraise. 💬 "I absolutely loved this--I have long struggled with how to have board set strategy when they aren't on the ground, and this directly addresses that" says Keshet Starr, Esq., CEO (Resolution of Agunot) 💲This isn’t some fluffy free webinar… this is a 2-hour masterclass and I’m asking you to pay so you show up live, consume the information, and put it into action…. because I want you to make a bigger impact as soon as possible. 📣 Why am I encouraging you to register for this revolutionary masterclass? 🌟 Because nonprofit leaders have been asking us for ways to stop wasting time doing things that aren’t going to move the needle for their organizations! 🤝 Because many nonprofit leaders feel like they and their boards are constantly stepping on each other’s toes! 🎯 Because too many nonprofit leaders fear that their boards don't have a clear picture of what their mission is! 🤷 Because too many nonprofit leaders feel that their board doesn't have complete confidence in them! 💼 Because many nonprofit leaders feel that their organizations would benefit from some professional advice on who should be doing what…. 🔗 REGISTER NOW>> https://lnkd.in/erF3mrQU #NonprofitLeadership #NonprofitBoards
